SCHS student arrested in alleged assault on staff member
A Sussex Central High School student was arrested for allegedly assaulting school administrators after a Jan. 5 disciplinary hearing at the Indian River Educational Complex in Selbyville, police reported this week.
According to police, after the hearing, a 16-year-old boy became loud and verbally abusive, allegedly threatening the staff members. One staff member reportedly laid hands on the student to restrain him, and the student then allegedly bit the adult’s hand. The administrator received treatment from a medical center, police said.
The student was restrained by three adults for several minutes before police arrived, they said. After a struggle with police, the student was removed from the building by Selbyville police officers, they reported.
On Jan. 10, after the completion of an initial police investigation, the juvenile was placed under arrest. He was charged with second-degree assault, offensive touching, disorderly conduct and two counts of terroristic threatening. He was released to his mother and is to be tried in Family Court. He is not currently attending SCHS, according to Selbyville Police Chief W. Scott Collins.
Because of Collins’ dual role as police chief of the responding department and IRSD school board member, he said the Selbyville Police Department and the Delaware Attorney General’s Office reviewed the case to ensure proper protocol was followed.
Representatives of the school district said the incident remained under investigation this week.
