Cape Gazette food editor, Bennett Orchards to star at farmers’ market
This Saturday, July 30, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will feature Cape Gazette Food Editor Denise Clemons and the Bennett family from Bennett Orchards. The market will open at the Historical Society Complex at the corner of Third and Shipcarpenter streets, running from 8 a.m. to noon.
At 9 a.m., the HLFM will get peachy when members of the Bennett family from Bennett Orchards will present an overview of the history of peaches in Delaware. They will also talk about the history of Bennett Orchards and the agrarian tradition of six generations of Bennetts. Want to know how to pick the perfect peach and the difference between white and yellow peaches? All will be explained, with free peach tastings.
This week’s cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. features Denise Clemons, a certified Delaware Master Gardener and food editor for the Lewes-based Cape Gazette newspaper. Her weekly columns include recipes highlighting seasonal produce, profiles on local farmers and guidelines for healthy cooking. Simple, easy, healthy and delicious are the hallmarks of her recipes.
During the summer months, Clemons’ columns regularly feature the programs and products available at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market and she encourages her readers to support the HLFM.
Clemons will shop the market in the morning and prepare two dishes that highlight the fresh flavor of Delaware corn. She will also show market shoppers a few clever gadgets that are helpful in the preparation, serving and eating of corn.
The Children’s Reading Program at the Market takes place from 9 to 10 a.m. every Saturday at the School House at the Lewes Historical Society Complex. The program is designed especially for children ages 3 to 8, but all children are welcome and encouraged to attend with their parents. Each week, a special book is chosen to reflect the themes of growth, change and healthy eating. This week Maureen Miller will read “Oliver’s Fruit Salad” by Vivian French.
Market organizers are calling for entries for the 2011 Great Tomato Recipe Contest. To celebrate National Farmers Market Week, Aug. 7-13, they will feature the Fifth Annual Tomato Festival on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the market from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be ribbons, prizes and glory galore for the winners, organizers promised. Prizes will include a $100 gift certificate to the market for the first-place winner.
To enter the contest, pick up the form at the HLFM table at the market or email them at historiclewesfarmersmarket@comcast.net, and they will send the form.
The market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through Oct. 29.
