Millville council gives the go-ahead for Thursday farmers' market

Millville will join the list of area towns that will have a farmers’ market this summer, with the Millville market set to take place on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The town council has discussed the idea for the past few months and this week approved going ahead with it.

County approves rezoning of Route 54 property to CR-1

The Sussex County Council this week approved the rezoning of 2.1185 acres of land at the southwest corner of Route 54 and Road 396 (Westline Road) from a combination of AR-1 (Agricultural-Residential) and C-1 (General Commercial) to being zoned entirely as CR-1 (Commercial-Residential).

To address procedural questions raised during the 2012 town council elections in Frankford, the town council is now considering possible changes to the town charter. The proposed changes would amend Chapter 401, Volume 62, Section 5, regarding the manner of holding elections and making nominations, to rely more heavily on state election code.

Sussex County Planning & Zoning commissioners this week voted to recommend approval of an ordinance creating a process by which off-premise electronic signs could be approved as special uses and voted to recommend against adoption of a second ordinance that would have prohibited the signs.

The word “free” catches people’s attention. I spend lots of time in the South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach. I no longer purchase cooking magazine subscriptions, because so many of the recipes are for chicken; since I’m allergic to chicken, I realized that I was wasting money. I now sign out back-issues of cooking magazines from the library and copy recipes that work for me.

Last year, Caravel narrowly edged Indian River in the final match of the Division II Team Dual State Wrestling Championship, but this past Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Smyrna High School, both teams were stopped short in the semifinals. The Indians powered past Seaford in the quarterfinal match after a slow start but were bested by a determined Polytech team, fueled with emotion that eventually carried them to the Division II title.

Earlier this season, the Lady Senators of Dover got the best of Indian River in the final game of December’s Pat Borowski Classic. But as the Lady Indians have been piecing together win upon win through the second half of the schedule, they made sure that this past Tuesday, Feb. 14, they would exact their revenge. With consistent shooting, well-executed passes and assertive rebounding, the Lady Indians came together as a team this week, defeating Dover the second time around, 55-50.

Keeonya Shelton

Indian River junior Keeonya Shelton has been an instrumental part of the girls’ varsity basketball team. She scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half during Tuesday’s 55-50 win over Dover and has proven to be a threat on the entire court.

Carney’s bipartisan bill aims to address drug shortages

U.S. Rep. John Carney is reaching across the aisle to help medicine reach the patients who need it. On Jan. 31, the Delaware Democrat introduced House Bill 3839, the Drug Shortage Prevention Act. Responding to the 230 drug shortages that occurred in 2011, the bill would aim to improve U.S. Food and Drug Administration communications and address drug shortages proactively.
